Abstract

The interpretation of al-na‘i>m in Surah al-Taka>thur (102):8 remains disputed because the surah begins with a critique of worldly rivalry but ends with scenes of death, hell, and final accountability. This article examines the basis of M. Quraish Shihab’s preference for understanding al-na‘i>m as bliss in the hereafter and assesses the consistency of this interpretation with the linguistic evidence he employs. This qualitative, library-based study focuses on Tafsir al-Mis}ba>h} and the Qur’anic text, supported by classical lexicography, a Qur’anic concordance, and selected exegetical works. The analysis distinguishes lexical meaning, the use of na‘i>m elsewhere in the Qur’an, and its meaning within the context of Surah al-Taka>thur. The study verifies seventeen occurrences of na‘i>m: one in the verse under discussion and sixteen in other verses, all of which occur in contexts related to the hereafter. This consistent pattern provides the strongest support for Shihab’s interpretation, while his distinction among related forms and the context of the surah provide additional support. The study concludes that the meaning of bliss in the hereafter is more strongly supported, but not exclusive. The opening of the surah still connects the verse ethically with worldly favors for which human beings are held accountable.
