PENDEKATAN TAFSIR KONTEKSTUAL ABDULLAH SAEED DALAM MENAFSIRKAN AYAT ETIKA-HUKUM

Abstract

This article examines Abdullah Saeed’s thought on the model of Qur’anic interpretation through a contextual approach, covering his biography, major works, and methodology, which is influenced by the ideas of Fazlur Rahman. The study aims to explore Saeed’s interpretive method, principles, and contribution to the development of contemporary Qur’anic exegesis, particularly in relation to ethico-legal verses. The data are obtained through a literature review of Saeed’s principal works, especially Interpreting the Qur’an: Towards a Contemporary Approach, and are analyzed using a descriptive-analytical approach to identify methodological patterns, classifications of ethical values, and the relevance of his ideas to modern contexts. The findings indicate that Saeed emphasizes the interconnectedness between the context of revelation (Context I), the contemporary context (Context II), and a mediating context through the identification of the Qur’an’s ethical values. This contextual approach offers an alternative perspective in modern tafsir studies, although it has limitations when applied to theological verses and verses that lack clear asbāb al-nuzūl.
